Our last night of a 10 month oz-experience has began. The last 2 weeks have certainly gone by fast. After Brisbane we stayed for a small week in Byron Bay. Enjoyed this area very much and got to see a glimpse of the whale migration! After Byron we travelled down towards Coffs Habour, stopping at [...]

Goodbye sweet Toyota
Since Darwin a lot has happened, good things and bad things. Let’s start off with the bad news, so we can leave it behind us! Unfortunately our van is no longer with us
She has brought us a long way, all the way from Perth up to a town called Guthalungra. That day, August 20, we left our camping spot just outside of Ayr to head for Airlie Beach. The car was driving smooth untill we got to that one hill. Half way I felt the power dropping, even tough my foot was still on the throttle. After the loss of power the temperature of the coolant started to rise and the pressure of the oil plummeted. I quickly switch the engine off and parked the van next to the road. We had a look at the engine trying to find the problem. Oil was good and there was still enough coolant. Eventually we discovered a leak coming from the bottom of the engine. Luckily the car stopped just in front of a petrol station and guess what.. a nice looking free camping spot! So we camped there for the night and the next day they came and towed the car away. A tear in the head gasket… it would only cost us 2 weeks of waiting and $ 4.000.
we decided to leave it behind of course.. we were lucky to find a ride to airlie beach to make the journey a bit more easy. stacking 6 people and bags + a lot of camping equipment in a stationwagon is not that comfy..
we camped in airlie beach for about a week where we had a very nice day out on the ocean around the whitsundays with whitehaven beach as a real highlight of the trip. simply stunning! the last day of the week we met up with valentin and kiki who we could ride with to brisbane.
after airlie beach onto hervey bay where we hopped on to fraser island. it’s all four weel drive and we rented our own car so every one had a bit of fun driving around on the island. to speak for myself (bart) i didnt find the island that spectacular but still enjoyed the good weather, people and freedom.
we arrived in brisbane now and with a small four weeks left we try to find a job to save up for new zealand and california. wish us luck!
we’ll make a big selection of pictures tomorrow!

first stage,.. succes!
yes ladies and gentlemen we’ve arrived! Darwin is bigger than we thought. a proper ‘little’ city. we’re all a bit in shock not having quietness around but bars clubs people & cars. i’m not liking it just yet. today is a bit of a everything and nothing day. see how we cope in the concrete jungle.
